VanceS: hi folks

RickRo: Hey Vance!

VanceS: yo

RickRo: I'm settin' up for my first trip to Beirut....

VanceS: cool

VanceS: what will you be doing there?

RickRo: I'll be working with several groups of teachers and visiting schools and such. Again, no time for tourism--just like when I went to Cairo

RickRo: Do you know of any live webcasts this Wednesday or one that is recorded that would be good as a demo?

RickRo: I just need one to show to the teachers I am working with--mostly secondary and primary teachers this time around.

VanceS: this wednesday?

RickRo: Yep

VanceS: oh, I get it, why not start one?

RickRo: Hmmm, I wouldn't mind trying, though I am unsure how reliable the connection will be...

VanceS: when on Wed exactly?

RickRo: From 3-5 Beirut time, though I would keep the live demos to the end of the session.

RickRo: I have a short tour of 10 minutes planned with a prof who specializes in SL

VanceS: I can be around at that time I think

VanceS: but I can't get to SL from my office

RickRo: That would be cool; could we do elluminate or another tried but true tool?

VanceS: elluminate the the triedest and truest a mon avis

DennisOl: Hey, Rick and Vance.

DennisOl: Thanks, Vance.

RickRo: Happy egg day!

DennisOl: Thanks, Rick.

RickRo: Vance, that link gives me a set of presentations--any one in particular?

DennisOl: I'll be back in a few minutes. The coffee is ready, I think.

VanceS: k dennis

VanceS: that link gets you into the live chat space rick

VanceS: did you want to try it now?

VanceS: do you see a big huge ENTER button there?

RickRo: Hmm, it didn't work for me.

RickRo: It pulls up a list of links... Strange. Let me try another computer.

VanceS: what didn't work?

RickRo: I only see links...

ThomasLev: hello!

DennisOl: Merhaba, Nergiz. Hi, Tom.

RickRo: Hey Tom!

DennisOl: I enjoyed seeing the photos of you at TESOL, Tom.

ThomasLev: We liked the roses, Dennis!

ThomasLev: Also it was good to meet you, Rick!

VanceS: well, I'm sitting at http://home.learningtimes.net/learningtimes?go=273662

DennisOl: Re the roses, you're welcome, Tom.

NergizK: I'm trying to enter... just a se

DennisOl: I got into Learning Times, Vance.

VanceS: Rick wants to try it

NergizK: OK. Was the invitation for everybody?

VanceS: sure

RickRo: I am waiting still for a new password. The one saved in memory doesn't work....

ThomasLev: it's not letting me in

VanceS: take your time, Nergiz is there

DennisOl: I had some problems, too, at first.

DennisOl: Have you actually launched an Elluminate session, Vance?

VanceS: yep

DennisOl: OK. It's working now. I forgot to launch the meeting.jnlp file.

VanceS: Rick wants to get people online Wed maybe

VanceS: he's thinking to use Elluminate

VanceS: if he can remember or recover his password

DennisOl: I can see the presentation screen, but I can't seem to enter text for the messaging.

DennisOl: I can hear you fine, though, Vance.

DennisOl: I can't see the whiteboard.

RickRo: feels like an outsider...

VanceS: naw, take your time

VanceS: LT not sending you a password yet?

RickRo: I have another weird thing happening on my Vista box with Firefox--the nav bar has been taken over by a google search bar.

RitaZ joined the room.

DennisOl: Rita!

RickRo: Notin' funny because I get the Learning times news letter...

RitaZ hugs all

VanceS hugs Rita

RickRo: Hey Rita!

RitaZ: good day, dear friends

DennisOl da fuertes abrazos a Rita

ThomasLev: Hi Rita!

VanceS: are you on a mac or pc Rick?

RickRo: I'm on a series of computers now, nerd that I am. I want to get the Vista one setup for the conference, though.

NergizK: Lost connection in Elluminate. Trying to reconnect

RickRo: Of course, if I can't get this running, I can always pull up a recorded webheads event to demonstrate....

VanceS: woo vista

VanceS: that's a tough one

RitaZ: whats up at Elluminate?

VanceS: what is it telling you?

VanceS: I just put up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMSinyx_Ab0

RickRo: I know. I may just have to bring another computer...

RickRo: Youtube, cool!

DennisOl: Vance is just doing a "play" session so Rick can practice using Elluminate.

DennisOl: I gather that you got into Elluminate, Rick.

VanceS: yeah, neat video too

VanceS: I hadn't seen it yet

DennisOl: I hadn't seen it, either. Very interesting.

VanceS: so when should we do WiAOC next year?

RitaZ listening to the video

VanceS: Has some personalities on it

RickRo: I remember libraries!

VanceS: libraries? (trying to remember)

VanceS: oh yeah that's where they kept the ..

VanceS: uh

VanceS: what were they called ...

RickRo: those paper thingies

VanceS: encyclopedias, yeah, the encyclopedias

RitaZ: sheets...?

NergizK -

RickRo: tree sheets

DennisOl: hee hee hee

NergizK -)

VanceS: remember those?

RitaZ: hmmm

DennisOl: Ah, yes. I remember them well.

RickRo: slow input devices

RitaZ: nice video

VanceS: when I was growing up, I had one in my house from 1939

NinaTL joined the room.

NergizK: I think the next generation will also ask what a TV set was?

RickRo: Hey Nina!

DennisOl: Hi, Nina! Hugs!

NinaTL: Hi everybody!

ThomasLev: Hi Nina!

VanceS: I used to love it, I used it for all my references

NinaTL hugs all around

NergizK: Hi Nina

RitaZ hugs dear roomie Nina!!!

VanceS: course it took me a while to figure out there was a second world war

NinaTL: Christos anesti, Dennis!

DennisOl: Aleithos Anesti, Nina!

DennisOl: Luvit, Vance!

NinaTL: I was thinking about you this morning, Dennis, thinking I hadn't chatted with you in ages

DennisOl: Yes, it's been a long time.

NinaTL: I wasn't here last week--visiting my sister on the Eastern Shore

VanceS: Hi Nina, we're all watchng http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMSinyx_Ab0

DennisOl: It's always good to be with family.

RitaZ: a good video, Nina

RitaZ: how was your trip?

VanceS: beats watching TV

NinaTL is watching

DennisOl: Definitely good.

NinaTL: There is an article in this morning's Washington Post about just this topic

VanceS: url?

ThomasLev: I did an exercise wih my students on it too

VanceS: listening to the first blogger in swahili being interviewed now

RitaZ: good for that, yes, Tom

ThomasLev: http://tomleveretts.blogspot.com/2008/04/eap2ww-practice-final-name-if-you-are.html

NinaTL: Here's the link to the Wash Post article: http://tinyurl.com/63q8y4

RickRo: has very choppy video reception....

ThomasLev: I'm spending the weekend reading Wikipedia essays

NergizK: Me, too, Rick

RitaZ: thank you, Tom!! will read it in detail later

RitaZ: and the article, Nina, thanks

NinaTL: It's unusual for YouTube to have such a long video--I am used to 2-3 minute "bites"

VanceS: Andrew Keen is talking now boooo

VanceS: or are any of you andrew keen fans

NinaTL: Have you seen the funny one about one guy explaining to another guy how to use a book?

NinaTL: It's Scandinavian I think

RickRo: sometimes I just wish for a full transcript and/or MP3 file instead of video...

BeyzaY joined the room.

NinaTL: Yes, you can go thru it faster!

NinaTL: Hi Beyza

BeyzaY: hi all

NinaTL: How are you?

RitaZ hugs dear Beyza

RickRo: Hey Beyza!

BeyzaY: I graded s many apepers that I feel like amachine

NergizK: Why boo? Don'T know know that person

BeyzaY frowns

NergizK: Hi Beyza

ThomasLev: you can grab it & save it more easily

BeyzaY: aand u?

BeyzaY: I hop everyone is ok

VanceS: he's always fun as a devil's advocate

NinaTL: I had to evaluate a bunch of writing portfolios for a colleague yesterday--a painful chore

VanceS: great debate between him and David Weinberger

BeyzaY: yes the worst part of being a teacher is that

VanceS: want the URL?

ThomasLev: I think I saw Andrew Keen judging from your comments

NergizK: Yes, always

BeyzaY: yes

NinaTL: interesting way to pronounce "encyclopedia"--the second syllable is almost lost, whereas in AmE it has a tertiary stress

VanceS: he's intelligent, just kind of a nay sayer

VanceS: it's good to have his perspective

DennisOl: Very interesting article, Nina.

DennisOl: Hi, Beyza!

NinaTL: Dennis, you can't have read it already!!!

BeyzaY: hi Dennis

VanceS: http://conversationhub.com/2007/07/09/video-david-weinberger-and-andrew-keen/

VanceS: This one is really good

DennisOl: Yes, I read it, but fast.

NinaTL: Is that another video, Vance?

DennisOl: I'll go back and read it more slowly later.

BeyzaY left the room (signed off).

BeyzaY joined the room.

VanceS: yeah, debate between Weinberger explaining folksonomy and Keen poo pooing it

DennisOl: Welcome back, Beyza.

NinaTL: Very impressive! I've recently been working on increasing my reading speed

DennisOl: I'll check that one later, Vance.

RitaZ: me too

NinaTL: We have "Ultimate Speed Reader" software in our lab

NinaTL: While my students do it, I do it too

RickRo: has anyone else seen the new program/site (for me) lessonwriter.com ? They had a demo and one of th edevelopers at TESOL

VanceS: but if anyone can support his point of view, I'd love to see it from multiple perspectives

NinaTL: I've gotten faster, definitely

BeyzaY: omg is there a reader like that?

DennisOl: I remember using something like "Ultimate Speed Reader" a long time ago. It was a kind of computerized tachistoscope. (Is that the right word?)

NinaTL: I started out at about 500 wpm and have managed to get to 800-900--once I even topped 1000 but that's not normal

VanceS: looks interesting

NinaTL: The students are getting faster also--from 150 wpm to 250, from 250 to 357

NergizK: That's quite an improvement, Nina

BeyzaY left the room (signed off).

BeyzaY joined the room.

DennisOl: LessonWriter looks very interesting, Rick.

DennisOl: http://lessonwriter.com/html/index.asp

VanceS: how does it work, can you explain simply?

NinaTL: Dennis, it has a cycle of different reading exercises: warmups, eye movement exercises, paced reading, timed reading, newspaper reading, and a game called EyeMax which I am terrible at!

RickRo: I would only be concerned about novice teachers thinking that lesson planning is passee

RickRo: It's now all automatic!

DennisOl: Ultimate Speed Reader:

DennisOl: http://www.smartkidssoftware.com/nddav41.htm

DennisOl: This is PC only.

NergizK: What, lesson planning is automatic?

VanceS: I used to use that

NinaTL: Ultimate Speed Reader: http://www.knowledgeadventure.com/school/catalog/usr.aspx

RickRo: lessonwriter.com Nergiz. Give it a look see.

NinaTL: I'm afraid I am not really listening to this video. Multi-tasking eludes me.

NinaTL: I am aleft-brained, sequential sort of person!

NergizK: OK, thanks, Rick

DennisOl: Thanks for the link, Nina. The one you posted notes that USR is available for Macs as well as PCs.

VanceS: the video is great background for me

ThomasLev: I have a good story about academics passing the Illinois Ethics test too quickly because they're speed readers

NinaTL: Dennis, you already read fast enough, don't you think?

RitaZ: Im trying to multitask, but either miss reading or listening!

ThomasLev: Illinois claimed they had to have cheated

NinaTL: Hey, Tom, I've been reading your Wal-Mart stories and enjoying them very much!

ThomasLev: thanks!

NinaTL: Tom has written a book of short stories

NinaTL: about crimes in a big box discount store (unnamed)

NinaTL: They are all very different and very good

RitaZ: can we get the book anywhere?

NergizK: What's it's name?

ThomasLev: it's on the web too

RitaZ: buy it I mean?

ThomasLev: I'm going to have it printed much better

RickRo: Walmart!

DennisOl: Haven't read the WalMart stories. Are these blog posts?

DelinC joined the room.

RickRo: The evil Walmart!

ThomasLev: what I gave Nina was printed on paper

NinaTL: Ni hao, Delin?

DennisOl: Ni hao, Delin!

DelinC: Hello, how are you all?

NergizK: Hi Delin

NinaTL: I saw a website where writers can post their drafts or stories or chapters and give readers a key

DelinC: Hi. what did you talk it?

RitaZ still listening to the video, quite long but interesting

ThomasLev: http://tlevsstuff.blogspot.com

VanceS: keen says "In my view the gatekeeper is the key player in truth ... they're the ones who determine truth"

ThomasLev: look on the template

VanceS: he means publishers etc

NergizK: Yes, Vance, but that was in the past, right? Now, everybody can publish

BeyzaY: can u post the url of the video again?

VanceS: someone asked Jimmy Wales ealier in the video if he thought it was ok that some 17 year old could edit what a 70 year old who had studied something for years had posted

BillGst1 joined the room.

NinaTL: The link to the writers' site is http://www.absolutewrite.com/

VanceS: and Jimmy said, yes, and sometimes the 17 year old is right

NinaTL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMSinyx_Ab0 Beyza

RitaZ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMSinyx_Ab0 the video

NinaTL: Rita, great minds...

DennisOl: Tom: Thanks for the tlevsstuff URL. I'll read it later.

RitaZ :-))

DelinC: Anyone can get it--- Write?

ThomasLev: actually even in the brief research I did for my Wikipedia exercise, I found cases where Wikipedia was right over years and years of academic "received" wisdom

NinaTL: Our IEP classes ended Friday--whew!!! Now I have 2 weeks more of the semi-intensive class. This semester has been so busy

ThomasLev: We're doing practice finals- on the chute through research papers and finals

NergizK: Really? I always caution students when they use Wikipedia as a resourece / reference. I wouldn't trust any one sourche anyway

BeyzaY: thnx

RitaZ: "truth gets personalized" I've just heard

DennisOl: Congratulations on wrapping up the academic year, Tom and Nina.

ThomasLev: it has advantages, that's all I'm pointing out

NergizK: I agree. I like the fact that it can be updated much faster

NinaTL: Here's the link to the 2:24 minute video about a guy learning to do stuff with a book http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1ZFt7tXUyU (I ghave up on the long one--takes too much concentration while chatting)

VanceS: Keen: when you democratize this, when everyone's truth is as credible as anyone else's, then truth itself is a casualty

VanceS: comments?

ThomasLev: Actually I was trying to explain to my students what the problem was with citing and referring to Wikipedia

NinaTL: Exactly what the Post article says

ThomasLev: and they didn't get it

ThomasLev: so I made my exercise

VanceS: that's a good one Nina

NinaTL: They talk about cumul.us, a site where the weather is reported by consensus

BillGst1: Some of you might be interested in a session we're hosting about using blogs & news feeds.

BeyzaY: my sts tend to copy and paste a lot

BeyzaY: luckily I can understand as they re very low level sts

BillGst1: I should mention that Vance suggested I come here.

NergizK: Hi Bill, welcome

DennisOl: I think many students copy and paste a lot from Wikipedia and other websites.

BeyzaY: I'm trying to teach them how to paraphrase these days

VanceS: Hey Bill

RickRo: He's wont to do that, Vill! {:-{>}

BillGst1: Thanks!

VanceS: glad you dropped in

DennisOl: Paraphrasing: a difficult skill.

VanceS: what's the URL for your sessions?

NergizK: I think helping students how to use the new resoureces is key now

NinaTL: Welcome, Bill

VanceS: Bill is moderating "extreme blogging' at knowplace this weekend

BeyzaY: really?

BillGst1: The emphasis I should mention again is on reading and finding and blending.

BillGst1: Here is URL for weekend: http://knowplace.ca/moodle/course/view.php?id=220

NinaTL: What characterizes extreme blogging as opposed to regular blogging?

BillGst1: Everyone welcome!

BillGst1: A strong desire to market the weekend.

NinaTL: haha

VanceS: good one bill

BillGst1: It's free though

NergizK: Bill, can log in as guests?

VanceS: it's free and unobtrusive

BillGst1: Register, please, but free.

VanceS: I think you have to register and enrol

VanceS: there are sessions every weekend

VanceS: elderbob helps organize them

VanceS: this video is great

RitaZ: wikp is accelerating the process of "convergence and agreement of what the truth is..." Wikip is the crowd version of truth..." (still stuck to the video)

VanceS: really an excellent debate

BillGst1: The sessions are now being announced on the contactpoint.ca events page.

DennisOl: I'm still stuck to it, too, Rita.

VanceS: Bill we're multitasking on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMSinyx_Ab0

VanceS: it's a very long video, 48 min

DennisOl: "The cult of the amateur has found a home."

BillGst1: and there is a feed for the events page on my blog at Http://unsymptomatictoo.blogspot.com

NergizK: Thanks, Bill.

NinaTL has given up but has svaed it to her playlists for another time (when she retires probably)

BillGst1: vance, what does that mean?

NergizK: We are extreme chatting :-)

BernardGst2 joined the room.

VanceS: cult of the amateur?

VanceS: right Nergiz

BillGst1: hahaha

RitaZ thinks the video will sleep at Nina´s for a long time...;-)

VanceS: I'll have a look at this video again

VanceS: it's not bad

NinaTL . o O ( Rita is right )

DennisOl: "The cult of the amateur" was part of the Wikipedia video.

ThomasLev left the room (signed off).

BernardGst2 left the room.

DelinC: The truth acording to wikipedia is good.

VanceS: to make matters worse we're also at Elluminate

DennisOl: Also this: "One does not learn about the world from personal experience; one learns from listening to experts."

RitaZ: well...., Vance Multitasker, I think I wouldnt be able to

NinaTL: Doing what at Elluminate?

BernardGst2 joined the room.

BernardGst2 left the room.

NergizK: Forgot that it would turn off everybody's

BillGst1: http://unsymptomatictoo.blogspot.com/

BeyzaY left the room (signed off).

BillGst1: I put it in before from memory (never a good idea for me)

NinaTL: Memroy has never been my strong suit

RitaZ: but your memory is far better than mine, Nina!!

NinaTL: Why do you say that, Rita?

MarielaRD joined the room.

MarielaRD left the room (signed off).

MarielaRD joined the room.

RitaZ: bec I heard you tell me stories from books you'd read...;-)

RickRo: Hi Mariela!

VanceS: ok, Bill, what issues have come up in your sessions so far

NinaTL: Does anyone know who wippz is? S/he is following me on Twitter

RitaZ: she's in Oaxaca, and is teaching English!!

NinaTL: How's Leanne? I talked with her prior to TESOL but not after

RitaZ: (Mexico)

VanceS: and hi Mariela

RitaZ: I am, vance

MarielaRD: I am graduating in 2 weeks

NergizK: I don't know, Vance. I've just learned about it. Is it synchronous and when? Haven't looked at the link yet

RitaZ: good ideas, nice sandpit, learning

MarielaRD: and I am putting together a presentation on the use of online chatting

RitaZ: Knowplace, Nergiz

VanceS: Rita is following the moodle tips session

VanceS: Bill is moderating the one on extreme blogging

MarielaRD: yes this is my first time

NinaTL: You are very welcome to join our chat

MarielaRD: that is great

MarielaRD: thank you

NinaTL: Are you interested in using web tools in teaching?

RitaZ: how did you get to know about us, Mariela?

MarielaRD: yes

MarielaRD: actually when I was an EFL teacher in Buenos Aires I started using the Internet as a teaching tool in 96

RitaZ: wow, Im from Rosario (ARG), where are you now?

MarielaRD: in San Francisco, CA

MarielaRD: but I don't use with my kindergaten students

RitaZ: so you are in the right place now, mariela :-)

MarielaRD: Yes, that is great

MarielaRD: but when I taugh in Argentina I had my Ss participate in email exchanges and chatrooms

MarielaRD: and I loved it. And they did too

RitaZ . o O ( Mariela is lucky to be away from BAires and Rosario..., full of smoke now!!! )

NinaTL: Just found a fun thing in old emails: try it! <http://www.procreo.jp/labo/flower_garden.swf>

NinaTL: Why smoke? Are there fires?

MarielaRD: that is way I'd like to update my knowlege on the use of technolgy for ESL/EFF purposes

MarielaRD: Ok i will

NinaTL: How did you find TappedIn?

RitaZ: theyre burning the islands in front of both cities to grow soja :-(((

NinaTL: That is very sad.

MarielaRD: well, I am putting together a presentation for a conference (it is one of the graduation requeriments)

RitaZ: terrible, Nina, unhealthy!!

NinaTL: Were they left wild up to now?

MarielaRD: my topic is going to be building l2 skills and discovering meaning thu online chatting

RitaZ: some wrere, some were not

NinaTL: Mariela, the presentation involves web resources for teachers?

MarielaRD: and I did some research

MarielaRD: yes

NinaTL: How horrible for the wildlife there--no escape from the flames

NinaTL: Webheads are an amazing repository of web resources

MarielaRD: that is part of it. I 'd like to give some practical tips on how to use online chatting more effectively, or how to get started

MarielaRD: cool

RitaZ: I have a ppt pres I gave years ago, Mariela

MarielaRD: really

RitaZ: on "Vindicating Chat"

NinaTL: I sometimes use my office here at Tapped In to chat with students, both in class and at a distance

NinaTL: and there is Daf's article which we all read in BaW

RitaZ: I can send it to you rita@zeinstejer.com

MarielaRD: that is great

RitaZ: shortage of food, etc

CarlaA: oi, everybody!

NergizK: Hi Carla

RitaZ: inflation, crazy

VanceS: oi

MarielaRD: that is so crazy

DennisOl: Definitely crazy!

RitaZ: human beings speaking about caring , this is the opposite!

MarielaRD: thank you Nina

DennisOl: Yes, thanks.

RitaZ: hi, Carla!

CarlaA: hey, Rita. I'm hear listening to you!

MarielaRD: Rick, were you answering my question?

DennisOl: I loved the video of Dudu about Earthday and taking responsibility for the environment.

OliviaO left the room (signed off).

NergizK: Asynchronous but at fixed times? (confused :-)

NinaTL: I missed Carla's video--haven't checked my bloglines account in weeks!

DelinC: Vance. I can't get it --- Knowplace. How acn getit>

CarlaA: nina, it was just dudu's short video for earth day...

VanceS: Delin, visit http://knowplace.ca/moodle/course/view.php?id=220

OliviaO joined the room.

VanceS: that's one of the courses

DennisOl: I continue to be totally amazed at how good Dudu's English is.

CarlaA: http://explorations.bloxi.jp/a/earth-day-2008/

NinaTL: Can anyone recommend a good site for hoaxes/urban legends that has a search function? Hoaxbusters.org is down

VanceS: register on the moodle and join the courses

OliviaO left the room.

RitaZ: Mariela, remind me in an email, I'll send you some urls

MarielaRD: OK, I will do that.

VanceS: urban legends?

CarlaA: Dennis, I'm amazed as well! He's really into English and the american way of life. Also, I guess what helps him a lot is that he reads like crazy, loves cartoons and play station!

DennisOl: Nina: Have you seen this one?

DennisOl: http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/internet/a/current_netlore.htm

CarlaA: Mariela, we use chat a lot, but I haven't used it as writing fluency, but more for office hours and building a sense of community with the group

DennisOl: All of those things make him a phenomenal learner, Carlinha.

NinaTL: Actually I found about.com

MarielaRD: ok, Carla

DennisOl: I thought it was interesting that he's Anglicizing his Portuguese.

NinaTL: and it has the allegation I wanted to check out--about an artist starving a dog

MarielaRD: or maybe for fluency in general

NinaTL: Thanks Dennis!

MarielaRD: or automacity

RitaZ: oh, that guy , an "artist" starving a dog to dath!!!! aargh

MarielaRD: I don't know what to call it

CarlaA: he is, Dennis!

CarlaA: oh, certainly, Mariela, fluency in general for sure.

MarielaRD: Rita, I will send you some questions

NinaTL: According to the analysis he has used the controversy to generate publicity for himself but maybe did not actually atarve the dog

RitaZ: do, Mariela, hope I can help

MarielaRD: thanks, Rita and Carla

RitaZ -)

CarlaA: here's where you can find the chat transcripts of my class that has just started http://explorations.bloxi.jp/a/earth-day-2008/

CarlaA: sorry, mariela. wrong!

CarlaA: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ajb6vghcj6h5_102hsw68cgm

CarlaA: here you go, Mariela.

MarielaRD: ok, I'll check it out. Thanks, Carla

CarlaA: You'll see there are all kinds of topics.

MarielaRD: ok

VanceS: one more http://www.snopes.com/

CarlaA: they are highly anxious low-tech adults

MarielaRD: great. Thanks, Vance

RitaZ: Vance has LOOOTS of info in his pages, I'll send them as well, mariela

DennisOl: Nina: Have you seen this one?

DennisOl: http://www.infoplease.com/spot/hoax1.html

MarielaRD: I also carried out a little experiment with my fellow classmats (grad students)

MarielaRD: I asked to write an email to me in their l2 (Spanish)

CarlaA: Vance, thanks for the great interview! I decided to change a whole week in my listening course because of it!

MarielaRD: and then I chatted with them

MarielaRD: in Spanish

RitaZ: so theyre stds of Spanish, right?

MarielaRD: no. They are future ESL teachers

CarlaA: so, Mariela, what was your conclusion of the experiment?

RitaZ: ah, I see

MarielaRD: I wanted them to go thru the experience of composing email and chatting in their L2

DennisOl: Thanks for the direct link to the Earthday materials, Carlinha. I'll get more active in the class (which is off to a great start).

MarielaRD: I am working on it (the conclusion)

CarlaA: take you time, Dennis!

VanceS: thanks Carla

VanceS: I really enjoyed it too

VanceS: and it's SO nice to be appreciated

DennisOl: The Snopes.com site is really interesting, Vance.

MarielaRD: they also filled out an online survey to compare how they felt when composing email and chatting

CarlaA: In fact, Vance, because of the great response, Cris and I have been considering a webcast like "people and places"

MarielaRD: so today I am going over the data and see what I find out

DennisOl: Will do, Carlinha.

VanceS: why not have your students do it Carla?

CarlaA: Of course, Dennis, you're part of the webcasting team!

CarlaA: oh, I'll try something this week.

MarielaRD: but I looked at some of their chatlogs and there is a lot of interesting data

DennisOl smiles

CarlaA: they're uploading and making little notes of their favorite places.

MarielaRD: lots of negogiation of meaning,

DennisOl: I've been trying to find a good graphic for my favorite place—the Oregon Coast.

CarlaA: Mariela, my students are thrilled when they get the first time in a chat and see how much they can produce in English.

MarielaRD: yes, that is great

DennisOl: I talked to a friend from Oregon yesterday, and that brought back a lot of very fond memories.

CarlaA: and i guess it helps a lot to develop their ability to think fast and free thinking in L2

DennisOl: Yes, it must be a great feeling for them, Carlinha.

DennisOl: Yes, definitely (re the ability to think fast and do free thinking).

CarlaA: Dennis, I'll be waiting for your favorite place!

DennisOl: OK!

MarielaRD: yes that is great

CarlaA: and we plan to keep interviewin dear webheads and friends.

CarlaA: the group is so diverse and in so many different places....

DennisOl: The interviews are a terrific idea.

MarielaRD: I'll be right back

CarlaA: and it's also a great resource for cultural awareness...

DennisOl: Definitely!

CarlaA: plus great classroom resource in general and just the pleasure of listening to different people...

RitaZ: I do agree with Vance in that stds should carry out these interviews..., would be great!

DennisOl: Yes, I also agree, Rita.

VanceS: I gotta run folks

RitaZ: not us

NergizK: Great idea, Carla. You could tell your students a bit about the person you want to interview and have your students come up with the questions and also actually do the interviews.

VanceS: got an appt

DennisOl: Take care, Vance. Best to Bobbi.

CarlaA: bye, vance. Take care!

NergizK: Bye Vance

VanceS: have the kids do the whole podcast, production, etc

DennisOl: And congratulations on becoming a grandfather!

RitaZ: bye, vance, have a nice week

VanceS: cya u2

CarlaA: yes, guys, that's a great idea.

VanceS left the room (signed off).
